Like many others during the COVID-19 pandemic, Winnie Teo found herself reconnecting with a childhood love – baking. By day, she is a dedicated accountant, but by night and on weekends, she transforms into a skilled baker, crafting homemade cakes that capture the warmth and nostalgia of her earliest baking memories. Today, her business, JioYouEatCake, serves up a range of flavorful, fruit-based cakes that have quickly won over dessert lovers who appreciate quality, freshness, and a dash of creative charm.

A Unique Approach to Cake Making

Winnie’s cakes stand out not just because they are delicious, but also because of the care and attention she puts into each one. Her creations, which include favorites like banana, lemon, and orange cranberry cakes, have a distinct flavor profile—one that avoids the heavy sweetness found in many commercial cakes. “As someone who doesn’t like overly-sweet cakes, I reduce the sugar in my bakes and try to avoid putting a thick layer of icing on my cakes,” Winnie explained.

What makes her cakes even more special is that they are made without preservatives, using only high-quality ingredients such as New Zealand premium grass-fed butter. As she puts it, “The type of cakes that I sell may be found in bakeries, but they will never taste like commercialized cakes. These cakes are homemade and fresh.” This commitment to quality and freshness ensures that every slice from JioYouEatCake feels like a special treat baked just for you.

From Childhood Passion to Full-Fledged Business

Winnie’s love for baking dates back to her childhood, where she began making banana cakes for fun and even sold them for extra pocket money at her mother’s shop. However, as her academic commitments grew, her baking took a backseat to her studies. It wasn’t until the COVID-19 pandemic hit that she was inspired to dust off her old recipes and return to her roots.

“We were going through COVID, and when everyone started being a baker, I felt inspired to start baking again,” Winnie shared. She noticed people posting about Hiap Joo banana cakes from Johor Bahru (JB), which sparked an idea. “I thought, why do you have to travel all the way to JB to enjoy a good slice of banana cake?” she wondered. That question eventually led to the birth of JioYouEatCake in August 2022.

The name of the business itself is a clever play on words. In Hokkien, “jio” means banana, but it also means “invite” in Singlish. The name, then, carries a playful pun—inviting people to enjoy a slice of banana cake without needing to endure a long trip or traffic jam. It’s a fitting name for a business rooted in both community and culinary delight.

Banana Cake: A Family Tradition and Signature Product

It’s no surprise that JioYouEatCake’s signature product is banana cake—a dessert Winnie has been baking with her mother since she was a child. “Banana cake is our signature product,” she said proudly. The recipe, she reveals, comes from a well-worn, yellowed piece of paper that has been in her family for years, possibly a secret recipe passed down through generations.

Winnie’s banana cakes have become beloved for their lightness, moist texture, and balanced sweetness. In addition to banana cake, she offers other variations like lemon cake, orange cranberry cake, and brownies, each prepared with the same level of dedication to quality and flavor.

The Future of JioYouEatCake

With JioYouEatCake, Winnie has successfully turned her passion into a growing business, offering cakes that combine nostalgic flavors with a modern twist. Each cake is crafted with love, fresh ingredients, and a focus on simplicity, making it a refreshing alternative to the overly-sweet, overly-processed options found in commercial bakeries.
